No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
